Nobody said it was going to be easy!!!!

I was at home for the weekend and I recruited about 10 people in the pub on Saturday night. They might not remember now but they will when they get the sponsorship card in the post. Mwahahaha.

As part of the recruitment I have decided that if people are struggling on the day that there will be an alternative 60km (40 mile) route. May sound like a cop out but I did drive most of the route this weekend and it is bloody tough, even seasoned cyclists said it is tough but I am determined to do the 90km and I think the majority of others are too. As they say "Nobody said it was going to be easy".

I must say though that the difference in peoples attitudes to it is funny. Some people are training well, while others are like "ah feck sure im sure il be able to do it on the day". Neill had a right good one. I asked him why he hadn't done the route and if he was going to do it before the day. He replied its bad enough I'll have to do it the once. Fair enough.

While others like Burkey and Cobhan are well able to talk up a good game. Burkey reckons he would win it only for Tony Griffin is taking part. While Cobhan said "Its an impressive line up but im definitely better at shootin my mouth off than any of those chiefs". Cant wait to see him walk his bike up that hill beside the Cliffs only made worse by the fact its his hometown!!

Some interesting bike choices are being made, some are going for the all out racers, others like me the hybrid, some lunatics are on mountain bikes and others are looking at tandem bikes, im sure there will be a high nelly too.

If people still dont have a bike please contact me or Neill because we will have an account in a shop in Ennis and Limerick where you can rent one for the weekend at a good rate.

Before I go we have got great coverage in the media. Some of us will be on the Clare People next week, one of the Clare lads will be on Spin SW on Sunday the 4th and on Friday the 9th a group of us will be on Ireland AM on TV3 at 9.30am so keep a look out. We need bodies for the TV3 one so if you have a face for the radio please do not contact me!!

Keep up the good work and keep recruitment and the fundraising going.

NB: Helmets have to be wore on the day and if people want insurance you have to sort it out yourself!

I will post again before the event.

News

Right this updating business is tough going so here are some bullet points;

Got the permit from the Gardai.
Daragh Clancy got some Clare hurlers involved Gerry O'Grady, BOC, Tony Griffin, Brendan Buglar, Pa Donnelan.
Did that 40 mile cyclein London, it was actaully handy enough really but it was a pretty flat route.
I sent out some info to news sites eg: http://www.hoganstand.com/Clare/ArticleForm.aspx?ID=117819

Should be on the Clare People and Clare Champion this week too so keep an eye out for it.

Has anyone done the route yet? Shane was saying that some hills are tough.

Here is a good site for technique

I am home this weekend if anyone wants to ask me any questions about it.

For those of you who will be coming a long distance to take part I will send on some B&B info for ye soon.

Let me know if you have no sponsorship cards too.

Update on events....1 month to go!!!

Took awhile for me to get back to ye there. All 3 followers ha. I know Gar Curran has been a loyal reader of this blog in New Zealand though. I think he still thinks it’s a joke and that I have some how convinced him that Clancy is doing it. Although we have recruited his brother Shane now so at least he will have eyes and ears on the day..On a side note Sean Daly reckons half of us will die on it and that he has his money on Shane Curran to come home alive. Supposedly he’s come back - a new man eating weights.

Anyway, just to keep ye all up to date. I drove that route Ballyvaughen to Kilkee and it was a disaster logistically. As well as that I had forgotten about the corkscrew hill so I have changed it to a loop route either Kilnaboy via Ballyvaughen, Fanore, the cliffs, Lahinch, Kilfornora, Kilnaboy or the same route and start at Corofin and end in Corofin. Not much in the difference about 90km which is 60 miles. So it is actually longer than the 75km of Ballyvaughen to Kilkee believe it or not.

I am in London now as I got a new job there. Bought my bike there, so it’s going to be tough to get it home. I’m actually in love with it, cycle to work every day about 10 miles a day. Dec Keane slag’s me saying that I sleep with it. Dec actually can’t do the cycle because he’s back is still not right from the accident and the Doctor advised against doing it. I still reckon he is faking it. While Mike Lynch is just refusing to even look at a bike. If ya meet him abuse him over it.

I’m doing a Charity cycle this Sunday actually for the British Heart Foundation from London to Windsor its 40 miles so it will be a good pre-season test. I will let ya know how I get on.

“The Far-cical” Progress report,

Its 70 days to the event and the training needs to be stepped up a bit. Last week I did my first cycle out of the gym environment of about 15km from my apartment in Harolds Cross to the M5O via Walkinstown Roundabout (if you know this roundabout, you know it better as an accident scene at rush-hour) well yes that’s when I decided to launch into this death trap..but thank god I survived the experience..!!

It was my first time cycling in the big smoke and a couple of things struck me…
You can’t cycle in the middle of the road weaving over and back like you can in the lazy back roads of Clare, where you’re biggest enemy is the neighbour’s dog biting at your feet. No you have to stay in the cycle lane which is at the side of the road where you feel every pot-hole or man-hole and your biggest enemy is that pr**k that parked his/her car in the lane therefore pushing you onto the main road or the footpath. I managed okay apart from one time when I got caught in two minds and nearly hit a lamppost, which would have been some story.

The rest of the week I was in the gym, although I have to admit one of those ‘gym’ days I only got as far as reception where I spent an hour reading the newspaper. I reckon it’s a critical part of the training, you get depressed after that and you try make up for it the next day.
Which didn’t really happen because last weekend I was at the U2 concert and I was worse for wear all weekend. So on Monday morning after dropping Erin to the airport I went to the gym with Connor Lawlor at 6.30am which felt great. I did 45mins on the bike which was 15km again plus other cardio. Although cycling in the gym and on the road are two different animals. I get very bored in the gym after about 20 mins whereas on the road you are always concentrating on traffic and roundabouts etc, you also have hills, rain and wind to contend with, but I actually prefer being on the road even though it tougher.

I was back on the bike again the week and cycled to Dundrum, then onto Ranleagh, along by the canal to Rathmines and was meant to go home but I felt I could do more so I went up Wexford St to George St along Dame St and back down Christchurch, then along the south circular to Dolphins Barn and back to the canal and home. I haven’t measured the distance yet on Google maps but I reckon it was definitely over 20km. I felt fine after it and could see that my knee is getting stronger from the endurance.

In terms of organisation I had to order more sponsorship cards as I have ran out of them which is encouraging. Let’s hope the on-line fundraising will pick up, especially as pay day is today. There are so many other things to do yet; like getting Gardai permission, getting a First Aid person for the day, someone to collect the bikes when we head for the pub, renting bikes and helmets, people and cars to help with support on the day etc.. I never realised there was some much organising to do. It’s almost daunting.

There is a possibility I might have to move to London in the coming weeks so I hope I will be able to keep the training and organising up.
I will be home this weekend for the bank holiday and I’m going to drive the route to see what lays ahead for us all taking part. I’ll report my findings on Monday.
